Is Dry Shampoo Bad For You?

Is Dry Shampoo Bad For you?

I think we can all agree that dry shampoo is a great invention from a convenience point of view, and is an eco move too, we it reduces water usage and power used to wash and style hair. But are those big cans of convenience good for you and the environment? Let's find out...

A lot of brands use alcohol alongside starch to absorb grease from your hair roots. This can cause the scalp to become dry and scaly and can make hair more vulnerable to breakage.

Watch that ingredient list because lots of dry shampoos contain synthetic fragrances, which can hide a whole load of sins, and some dry shampoos contain talc, which is a mineral that can become contaminated with asbestos, which is a well known carcinogen. Best to avoid in our opinion.

Aerosols are a great way to distribute dry shampoo through your hair, but waste a whole load of product and encourage you to breathe it in. But more importantly, they use petrochemicals to pressurise the product and when you spray, these are released causing harm to the ozone layer.

But don’t despair, because a number of natural dry shampoos have hit the market and do a great job of tackling those greasy roots. Our favourite is KiteNest’s 100% Natural, Organic Dry Shampoo. Rather than alcohol or talc, they use clay, along with arrowroot powder to absorb grease. They’ve added Comfrey Root Powder which helps calm skin, reducing the risk of irritation, and Horsetail Extract to encourage hair growth. Scented with essential oils and packaged in a plastic free, refillable tin, it is super sustainable, vegan, natural and effective.
