I have had eczema since I was 2, and although the patches on my elbows and knees disappeared as I got older, my face continued to be really challenging. I never, even with steroids, managed to get it under control. I tried taking away everything nice from my bathroom products and only using soap substitutes, but still had issues. I had resigned myself to always having it there, and disguising it as much as possible with make-up, which also probably didn't help!
Then, about a year ago, I ditched my old products and started fresh, using products with natural ingredients. Do I still get eczema? I'd be lying if I said I didn't; hormones and stress sometimes result in a flair up. BUT there is a key difference now; I can get on top of the flair up and can maintain it. I finally have periods of time where I am completely eczema free, and it feels GREAT! Yesterday, a school mum commented that my skin is glowing... my skin!!! I didn't know what to say.
I am not wearing make up in either of the images (just a tan in the "after" image!). So here are the products that I've been using to achieve this. Everyone is different, but maybe, just maybe this might help you too...
Dr Botanicals 100% Natural Refresh Multi-Purpose Balm
I use Dr Botanicals 100% Natural Refresh Multi-Purpose Balm to cleanse each morning and night. It smells really zesty, and it is really calming. I smooth it on and then use hot water and an angel cloth to remove it. A flannel would work just fine. Unlike soaps it gets my face clean without stripping oils away, so it helps keep skin clean and hydrated too. One jar lasts me a few months.
Gentle Eye and Face Serum - PHB Ethical Beauty
This serum is really light and I have found coupling this with the balm made a huge difference to my skin in about a week. I know within seconds if something disagrees with my skin, but this doesn't irritate me at all, and just seems to absorb straight in and get to work! I add a moisturiser or oil on top. This is a small jar, so I get through about 1 a month, but I couldn't be without it now!
Angel Cloth - The Konjac Sponge Company
I like to use an Angel Cloth as my skin is so delicate and I find that this removes the product and dead skin cells without causing any irritation. My skin is so thin from years of steroid use, so I try to be really careful. This cloth is made from konjac and it is a bit strange as it is really hard until water is added. But then it turns into a soft, smooth cleansing cloth once wet! These last for 3 months with the right care.
Lip Rescue Balm - Bowe Organics
My mouth has been a real problem area for me, but I have tried multiple lip balms without lasting success, until this! It is unscented, which is a must for me as anything fragranced seems to irritate. This is a blend of plant and nut oils and butters and it is so nourishing. It stays put despite the absence of beeswax, and has really helped me get soft lips without cracking, which is just amazing. This lasts for AGES so is worth the price tag.
Natural Mineral Blusher - Love The Planet
I don't wear make-up most of the time now, but when I do, I only use pure mineral products. There's no fragrance or talc to mess my skin up. Most days I just use a little blusher and these from Love The Planet are just amazing. So highly pigmented, you hardly need any. I decanted mine into little tins, and I give it a shake and use it directly from the lid, so it last yonks!
Coffee Face Scrub - Upcircle Beauty
I occasionally exfoliate and I really thought that this would cause me issues if I'm honest, but I was really pleasantly surprised. The Floral Blend is technically for sensitive skin, but I get on well with the Herbal Blend. It has shea butter and coconut oil in, which leave my skin feeling really soft. I only use it occasionally but it does the trick without causing flair ups. Their body scrubs are also lovely.
And a couple of other recommendations
- FaceTheory have some brilliant products for eczema. I have used their Centasoothe Botanical Serum and their Balancing Rosehip Oil, and found them extremely effective. I use the serum on problem areas and it helped me get rid of the patches of eczema on my mouth, eyes and neck without steroids. I use the Rosehip oil each morning after applying the PHB serum.
- If you want a fake tan, I highly recommend Tropic Sundrops. You add it to your own moisturiser which is great for us eczema sufferers, and it is all plant based. It lasts for yonks and gives you a natural glow.
As a fellow eczema sufferer I feel your pain! I hope that you find something that works for you. If you try this routine please let me know how you get on as I would love to hear!
